ARTIST BIO:

Catherine Aiello works in printmaking, textiles and drawing. Her works reflect the experience of exploring the world around us, both the physical and social worlds we inhabit every day, but also the inner landscape of memory and dreams. She describes her varied series as "constellations" or groupings of related works that evolve over time.Screenprint and woodcut/ relief printmaking are her primary means of imagemaking. Woodcut printmaking involves carving an image into a flat, smooth board. In order to make a black and white print, the artist carves away all the white parts of the image, leaving only the raised areas of wood, which are then covered with a thin layer of black ink and transferred to paper. Reduction woodcut is made by carving and printing every color from the same board. Working from lightest to darkest, each layer of color is carved, then printed, before moving on to the next. This creates a unique print which can never be reprinted since by the end of the process most of the board has been carved away. Screen printing offers the possibility of a fluid line, since the drawing can be transferred directly onto the screen using a photo-exposure process. Ink is then passed through the screen and onto the paper in the form of the image. Sometimes multiple layers are used in one print. Catherine works in Florence, MA and creates her prints at Zea Mays Printmaking. She holds a BFA from Alfred University.
