The parable of the Second Arrow, a well-known Buddhist teaching, reminds us that while we cannot always control difficult events, we can choose how we respond to them. The “first arrow” is the challenge itself; the “second arrow” is the suffering we create by dwelling on or resisting that experience. By avoiding the second arrow, we give ourselves space to feel, process, and ultimately heal.

In this workshop, we explore that idea through Block Out Art. Using torn book pages as the canvas, participants create new meaning by selecting words or phrases to form original messages. The remaining text is then transformed with color, drawing, or design to “block out” what is no longer needed. This mindful creative practice encourages reflection, release, and renewed perspective.
