“A good rhythm is something anyone can enjoy, it’s primal human instinct,” says Rene Wise, one of our guests in late September, describing the timeless and crossover quality of groove in techno when reflecting on his musical upbringing and growing up with a father who was a professional drummer. Tonight’s programme focuses on contemporary techno’s roaring rhythms, their primordial pull, and the captivating intricacies between the beats: mesmerising melodic fragments, tantalising textures, and dazzling dramaturgies. The British-Iranian artist has become a present-day staple of unadulterated techno with his raw yet modern, almost classicist approach.
Hadone, with his sleek, dark and hard-edged techno, joins the bill with a live set. The French artist began his musical journey through live performance before turning to DJing. Always inclined to merge music with other forms of expression — from fashion, gaming and design to short films — it’s no surprise he has returned to live performance as an immediate and essential form of musical articulation. This time, it’s pared down to the bare essentials: a minimal Ableton Live setup for meticulous control.
