Święconka meaning "the blessing of the Easter baskets", is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions on Holy Saturday during Easter. With roots dating back to the early history of Poland, it is also observed by many other Polish communities around the world. Fr. Greg brings this tradition to our parish every year that involves bringing a basket of symbolic foods to church on Holy Saturday to be blessed, and then enjoying them at the Easter Sunday breakfast. The foods in the baskets have a symbolic meaning:
eggs – symbolizes life and Christ's resurrection
bread – symbolic of Jesus
lamb – represents Christ
salt – represents purification
horseradish – symbolic of the bitter sacrifice of Christ
ham – symbolic of great joy and abundance.
