Blender for Digital Fabrication
With Luis Pacheco
//WORKSHOP Description
Dive into the world of digital fabrication with Blender, the powerful open-source 3D modeling software. This intensive three-day workshop is designed for individuals looking to bridge the gap between digital art and physical creation. Participants will embark on a comprehensive journey through Blender’s interface, focusing on the creation of 3D printable objects, computer-controlled drawing and cutting, and the generation of toolpaths for robotic arms. While this workshop will cover the basics of Blender, it is tailored for those who have some familiarity with CAD software, aiming to enhance their digital fabrication skills in a dynamic, hands-on environment. Participants will gain the skills and knowledge needed to confidently use Blender for a variety of digital fabrication processes. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have produced several ready-to-use digital models, understood the integration of Blender into digital fabrication workflows, and learned how to apply these techniques to create physical objects using 3D printing, CNC machines, and robotic arms.
Participants should have a basic understanding of CAD software. No prior experience with Blender is required, but familiarity with 3D modeling concepts will be beneficial. Attendees are required to bring their own laptops with Blender installed. All other materials and equipment for digital fabrication (3D printers, CNC machines, robotic arms) will be provided during the workshop.
//TUTOR
Luis Pacheco, is a research specialist at FIU’s Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab where he works on developing robotic applications for architecture and construction, supports faculty research, and provides help and mentorship to students. Luis was the co-founder and former CEO of MakerMex, the first Mexican company to develop and manufacture 3D printers. In this capacity, Luis led the development of multiple 3D printers, MakersCAD software, and established the MakerLAB facility in Leon, Mexico. His awards include MIT’s Innovators under 35, Mexico, 2016, Red Ribbon at the World Maker Faire, 2017, and CONCYTEG Innovation prize in 2014. Luis has a bachelor of architecture from La Salle Bajío in León Mexico, and a master's in Robotics and Advanced Construction from IAAC in Barcelona.
