Group Ride Classification Glossary

This guide standardizes how we classify group rides.

Skill Levels
  • Skill Level 1: You have never ridden a bike before, or it’s been years since you last rode.
  • Skill Level 2: You’ve never ridden trail, but occasionally ride on dirt roads or bike paths, and you work up a sweat with regularity doing other activities.
  • Skill Level 3: You’ve ridden trails and are learning how to downshift properly when climbing (you know how to shift in advance of a steep pitch without any painful derailleur noises) and to brake appropriately (so you don’t go over the handlebars) on steeper descents. You’re an active person and exercise weekly.
  • Skill Level 4: You’re into mountain biking and are building skills to handle rocks and roots on climbs and descents. You live an active lifestyle and exercise regularly.
  • Skill Level 5: You trail ride regularly and are looking to take your mountain biking to the next level. You’re working on riding more technical features and holding speed through turns. You’re comfortable on hour-long rides and want to go farther.
  • Skill Level 6: You’re ready to roll down that scary rock face and are envious of your friends who know how to do a tail whip in the bermy singletrack. You’ve got the fitness to power up the hills with energy to spare.
  • Skill Level 7:You’re comfortable on all terrain, but still ride in control. Maybe you’re a little cautious on gnarly features. You’ve gotten into Strava and push to PR on climbs.
  • Skill Level 8:You’re first to the top and fastest to the bottom. You’ve competed in cross country, downhill, or enduro racing. You enjoy pushing the limit on all types of terrain.

Pace
  • Fast >10 MPH, expect a challenging pace
  • Quick 8–10 MPH, rapid pace with minimal stops
  • Moderate 6–8 MPH, spirited pace, stopping as needed to collect stragglers
  • Mellow 5–6 MPH, easy-going, social pace, with planned stops
  • Slow <5 MPH, effortless pace, stopping frequently

Distance
  • A numerical value indicating distance. For example, 10 miles.

Duration
  • The amount of time (Hours:Minutes) riders will be spinning pedals.

Trail Difficulty
  • Red :very technical ride, expect hazardous features such as drops
  • Black: technical ride, expect rock gardens, skinnies, etc.
  • Blue: some challenging sections, but mostly non-technical
  • Green: non-technical ride

Modifiers can be used to add additional information about the ride. Examples include:

  • Adaptive: intended for adaptive riders
  • No-drop: no riders will be left behind
  • Social: expect plenty of stops to chat
