To the east of Glen Etive, the four Munros of the Black Mount form a striking and very photogenic quartet on the fringes of Rannoch Moor.
Such is the complexity of the topography, it is difficult to truly appreciate the grandeur of this mountain range in miniature, without getting amongst them and exploring their interior.
Stob Ghabhar is arguably the most shapely peak of the group and a vast myriad of ridges stretch out from its summit in all directions like the fingers on an outstretched hand.
Stob a' Choire Odhair, located at the end of one of these fingers, feels like more of a satellite than a separate Munro in its own right.
At the northern end of the range, Creise and Meall a' Bhuiridh, towering over the Ski resort on the lower slopes, complete the quartet.
To complete the classic end-to-end traverse is no small undertaking and a good level of fitness will be required to enjoy the day to it's fullest.
On our varied and committing route we will encounter plenty of steep ground and some mild scrambling up to Grade 1. Much of our route is pathless and on crossing the evocatively named Bealach Fuar-chathaidh (Pass of the cold spindrift), it is not unusual to encounter some powerful gusts. Elsewhere on the route, we will follow excellent stalkers paths that ease the going considerably.
It is most likely that we'll complete the traverse from south to north starting at Victoria Bridge and ending at the Ski resort in Glencoe. Weather conditions may dictate otherwise but, whichever way we tackle it, we'll shuffle cars around at the beginning to avoid a lengthy walk back along the West Highland Way at the end of the day.
This Central Highlands Classic of all four Black Mount Munros is a unique challenge and, if incorporated with visits to Inveroran Hotel and Kingshouse, may offer one of the finest pub-to-pub crawls in Scotland!
