Believe it or not, there's more than one lesbian vampire novel written by a Black queer writer. Jewelle Gomez, author of The Gilda Stories (1991), is the inspiration for Octavia Butler's 2005 novel, Fledgling, about a young vampire who wakes up in the middle of nowhere with amnesia. Gomez and Butler are among two of the writers who have defined the field of Black queer speculative fiction since the 1970s. Visit NAPL to join writer and literature professor Anaïs Duplan as he shares his favorite novels and short stories in this exciting genre, engaging with the vast social and political potential of the stories and the characters who populate them.
