Join us for a powerful and insightful lecture as Dr. Upham-Bornstein examines the use of urban enslaved labor in the construction of Dry Dock No. 1 at Portsmouth’s Gosport Shipyard in the 1830s. Upon completion, it became the first operational dry dock in the Western Hemisphere. Without this forced labor, Boston’s dry dock might have been completed first, altering the course of U.S. naval history.
Dr. Upham-Bornstein will explore the complex and often tense relationship that developed between enslaved and free African American laborers and their white counterparts at the shipyard.
Don’t miss this compelling discussion on a critical chapter of Portsmouth and American history. This special Black History Now event is free and open to the public.
