This poetry workshop with with Dave Neita & Oyin Oladipo is one of the events in the diocese marking Black History Month 2023. This event is part of a series exploring the relationship between climate justice and racial justice.
Dave Neita
Dave Neita is a lawyer, a published poet, lecturer and international speaker specialising in cultural leadership. Based in the UK, he is a commentator on race, politics, mental health and the arts. Dave speaks widely in churches in the UK and abroad, promoting a redemptive and inclusive message of bringing about harmony in community, and he has delivered sermons in St Paul’s Cathedral, Oxford University, and many other venues. Known for his success as a member of the legal team behind a class action suit against a major multinational corporation on behalf of thousands of injured South Africa Miners, Dave continues to work as an advocate for underprivileged, exploited or disenfranchised people, everywhere. Taking a creative approach to campaigning, Dave has written a play on the Windrush Scandal called The Bitter Windrush Blues and he has performed and toured this play across the UK demanding justice for those adversely affected by the hostile environment. Dave has published one book and 4 audio CDs of his poetry.
Revd. Oyin Oladipo
Prior to ordination training he was at various times a Radio Station manager and Further Education Tutor. He studied theology and also trained for the Ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University.
The son of a poet and a school teacher, Oyin uses poetry to address issues which are of importance to him and as a tool for reflection and call to social action. His poem 'I cannot breathe' which was written to reflect on the death of George Floyd was published on Wycliffe Hall's website, used by the chapter of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and also by the eminent Scholar, The Rt Rev Prof NT Wright in his article titled 'undermining racism'.
Oyin is currently serving his curacy at Ascension Church, Custom House. He is also the Chaplain at East Ham Care Centre. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
