Join us for the #BlackBrooklyn2026 Agenda Assembly, a pivotal gathering where community voices converge to shape the future of Black Brooklyn. This assembly is more than a meeting; it's a collaborative space where participants can join teach in on: New York City and State legislative and budget processes, Know Your Rights and Healing and Restoration then help to develop an agenda that prioritizes the needs and aspirations of Black Brooklyn residents.

  • Teach In: Understand the legislative and budgetary frameworks that shape our city and state, Know Your Rights when you encounter Federal Immigration Enforcement and Healing and Restoration conversation; empowering you to advocate effectively for our community.

Registration & Networking Breakfast: Our Roots, Our Community

Info: As attendees arrive and sign in, they will receive their breakout group assignment by selecting a color card. Over breakfast, participants will connect through a shared storytelling activity, "How Did Your Family Get to Brooklyn?" This interactive exercise will explore the diverse migration journeys that shaped Black Brooklyn—whether through Indigenous roots, the Great Migration, Caribbean and African diasporic movements, or other pathways. This session sets the stage for the day’s discussions by grounding our advocacy in the rich history and lived experiences of our community.

Info: Branch President Joan Alexander-Bakiriddin kicks us off by welcoming participants and setting the stage for our collective work. She will outline the objectives of the day and deliver a powerful presentation on our role as advocates—how we organize, influence policy, and hold leaders accountable to advance equity and justice for Black Brooklyn. She will also announce the result of a committee initiative from 2025

Overview of City and State Budget/Legislative Process

Info: NYS NAACP Executive Director Chris Alexander provides a comprehensive overview of how the legislative and budget processes function at both the city and state levels. This presentation will break down how policies are proposed, debated, and enacted, as well as how budget decisions impact Black communities in Brooklyn. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the pathways for advocacy and influence in shaping legislation and public funding priorities.

Facilitated by experienced leaders, these sessions will provide a space for collaborative problem-solving, strategic planning, and actionable next steps to drive meaningful change in our communities.

Info: This session will outline the key advocacy dates and next steps to keep the momentum going. We’ll highlight our upcoming Albany Lobby Day and our City Hall Lobby Day, providing participants with the tools to engage effectively. Additionally, we’ll discuss the upcoming midterm elections and their impact on Black Brooklyn. The day will conclude with a summary of our collective work, next steps for continued advocacy, and appreciation for the time, insights, and commitment of all participants.
