About this Event

Workshop Overview

Our April workshop builds on previous learning by advancing students into two exciting tracks: Navigation & Innovation and Capstone Build & Development.

Beginners focus on navigation systems, programming line-following robots that can stay on track, respond to stations, and make directional decisions using colour sensors. Through hands-on challenges, learners experiment with different coding approaches, debug issues like drifting or missed turns, and refine their robots for accuracy. This process strengthens their understanding of how sensors, logic, and movement work together, while also developing teamwork and persistence.

Advanced learners transition from planning to execution as they begin constructing their capstone projects. Using the blueprints developed in the previous month, they assemble their robots, integrate motors and sensors, and test key functionalities such as movement, detection, and decision-making. Along the way, they document their progress, refine their designs, and prepare for their final showcase presentations.

This is a free workshop and an exciting opportunity for students to deepen their robotics knowledge, strengthen problem-solving skills, and bring their ideas to life in a supportive, high-energy environment.

Beginner Track - Line Following & Navigation Systems

Beginners program robots to follow paths using colour sensors, applying logic structures such as loops and conditionals to enable responsive navigation.

Materials Required

Black Boys Code will provide all required materials. Just come with curiosity and be ready to build!

  • Laptop or tablet with SPIKE app installed
  • LEGO SPIKE Prime kit with hub, motors, and colour sensor
  • Black-line tracks and navigation setups

Beginner Track Learning Outcomes

Understand Line Detection: Learners will describe how colour sensors detect lines and guide robot movement.

Apply If/Then Logic: Students will program robots to make decisions based on sensor input.

Use Loops for Continuous Navigation: Learners will ensure robots continuously adjust while following a path.

Test and Optimize Performance: Students will debug issues such as drifting, overshooting turns, or incorrect readings.

Connect to Real-World Applications: Learners will explore how line-following systems are used in areas such as manufacturing and delivery systems.

Advanced Track - Capstone Build & Development

Advanced learners begin constructing their capstone robots, transforming their ideas and blueprints into working prototypes.

Materials Required

Black Boys Code will provide all required materials. Just come ready to build and innovate!

  • LEGO SPIKE Prime kits (hub, motors, sensors, structural parts)
  • Project blueprints and design notes
  • Laptop or tablet with SPIKE app installed

Advanced Track Learning Outcomes

Assemble Capstone Robots: Students will build robots based on their planned designs and structures.

Integrate Code and Hardware: Learners will apply loops, conditionals, and sensor feedback into their builds.

Test Subsystems: Students will test motors, sensors, and individual components before full integration.

Document Development Process: Learners will track progress through notes, images, and reflections.

Prepare for Final Showcase: Students will begin structuring how to present their projects, including design thinking and problem-solving approaches.
