About this Event
Black Maternal Health Week is recognized each year from April 11-17 to bring attention and action in improving Black maternal health. Everyone can play a role in working to prevent pregnancy-related deaths and improving maternal health outcomes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, including the social determinants of health, structural racism and discrimination that underlie variations in black women receiving quality healthcare. In addition, most pregnancy-related deaths occurred during pregnancy, delivery, and up to a year postpartum. It is estimated that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are preventable.
Join us for a screening of the "Birthing Justice" documentary and moderated panel discussion featuring speakers from the Frederick County Health Department, Frederick Health Hospital, local community based midwives and doulas, and women with lived experience.
