Come along with AWA Conservation Specialist and avid bird photographer Cameron Hunter to learn the basics of bird watching. You’ll have a chance to view a variety of species and take photos at one of the best places to see birds in Southern Alberta. No prior experience or equipment necessary.Frank Lake, which is about 10 kilometers east of High River, is an important place for water birds. It is a temporary stopping place for birds migrating from the south, as well as having a large permanent population of various types of birds. Early May is part of the migration period for many birds.
This a chance to learn the basic techniques of identifying birds, as well as to see numerous different species in a typical southern Alberta lake habitat. You can also learn some handy tricks and tips for taking great wildlife photos! At last year’s event participants saw more than 30 different species.
We will meet at Anderson LRT station to carpool the 40 minutes to Frank Lake where we will walk a leisurely 5-6 km.
Things to bring include: Warm clothes and rain gear in case it rains, waterproof boots can be helpful as some of the ground could be wet, a small notebook and pencil, a packed lunch and water, a pair of binoculars and a bird guide (if you have them), and a camera, if you wish to take photos.
The coordinator will bring a scope that can be shared by the group, as well as 1-2 extra pairs of binoculars for those who do not have their own.
