Sculptor Carole Chaloupka teaches sculpture as a deeply satisfying process - one that allows the maker to form an object with their own hands, infused with personal meaning and intention. In the Birds of Becoming workshop, Carole will offer tried-and-tested, step-by-step method to guide students in sculpting a beautiful small bird using a lightweight, air-dry Japanese stone clay.
Birds are rich in symbolic meaning and appear throughout religious texts, mythology, and folk tales as powerful messengers. They have long symbolized freedom, transition, and the soul in motion—creatures that move between earth and sky, matter and spirit. Across cultures, birds are seen as guides and carriers of meaning, marking moments of change, loss, return, and becoming. Their flight evokes transcendence and perspective, their migrations speak to trust in cycles and renewal, and their fragility reminds us of life’s impermanence and preciousness. Birds also embody intuition, belonging, and quiet wisdom, inviting us to listen more closely to inner knowing as we move through thresholds of transformation.
