About this Event
Owls have inspired a sense of wonder and mystery in humans for centuries. Their cryptic nocturnal habits obscure their physical nature and make them the subject of myth and legend. But many of their physical attributes are at least as remarkable as the superstitions that surround them. Owls possess some of the most advanced adaptations found in birds, such as eyes that allow them to see prey in complete darkness, ears that can pinpoint the exact location of a mouse at 30 yards, the ability to capture prey that far outsizes them, and completely silent flight. Owls inhabit most of the terrestrial environments on our planet, including harsh environments like the forests of Siberia. Join us for a talk about owl natural history, owl species of New Mexico, and the unique evolutionary adaptations that allow them to live nocturnally.
