NEXT LA ZOO PROTEST - SUNDAY NOV 2 - 10 to 12Billy and Tina the elephants are no longer at the Los Angeles Zoo and their former enclosures now stand empty. This is something we had long dreamed of. However, the reality turned out to be a nightmare - for those who have fought for them throughout the decades but mostly for Billy and Tina who are now, not in sanctuary finally, but rather locked up far away in another zoo.
Though the elephant exhibit was way too small for these far-ranging beings and caused them much stress and trauma, it is still prime real estate for a zoo. While animals like the giraffes and zebras - other wide ranging species - are cramped into much smaller areas, these 3 acres sit empty. Why?
If zoo director Denise Verret can't run the LA Zoo so the animals are as well-cared for as is possible in zoo conditions, then the city of LA should hire someone who can, someone who cares, and someone who has animal knowledge and training.
