Bill Coon, an award-winning performer, composer, and educator has been an important member of the Canadian music community for thirty years. A leader of several of his own groups including the Bill Coon Trio (with bassist Darren Radtke and drummer Dave Robbins) The BC Double Quartet (Brad Turner, Cameron Wilson), he is active in collaborating with musicians across the country and is a sought-after guitarist and composer.
His most recent release is a solo guitar recording, Standard Elegance (Cellar Music). Coon is also well-know for his many collaborative recordings including Balladextrous with Sienna Dahlen, StringSongs with Laura Crema, and Slow Road with Triology (Miles Black, Jodi Proznick) featuring Scott Hamilton, and Two Much Guitar with Oliver Gannon.
Among the jazz greats he has performed with: Jimmy Heath, Peter Bernstein, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Lewis Nash, Peter Washington, Lorne Lofsky, Roddy Elias, Sheila Jordan, Grant Stewart, Pat Bianchi, John Gross and Rebecca Kilgore.
He has been commissioned to write music for the Jill Townsend Jazz Orchestra, Cory Weeds 11-piece ensemble, Montreal’s Altsys Jazz Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra and for VJO’s new release, Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Meets Brian Charente. Coon is grateful for the opportunity to have written many of his works at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
He has received Canada Council awards to study with Jim Hall, Neil Chotem, and Dr Louis Stewart. He was the recipient of national Jazz Awards Guitarist of the Year in 2009 and the winner of Western Music Awards most recently with Jasmine Jazz for best instrumental recording of 2023.
As well as an active performance and composing schedule Coon is a former Jazz Studies instructor at Capilano University and currently teaches part-time at the VSO School of Music in Vancouver, Canada.
