About this Event

Bikepacking Overnighter to Saxapahaw Campground (for all genders)

Date: Saturday, May 23th - Sunday, May 24th

Location: Starting at Back Alley Bikes (100 Boyd St, Carrboro) and riding to Saxapahaw Campground and back

Join us for a relaxed overnight bikepacking trip to the cutest, cleanest dang lil' campground over Saxapahaw way. Our route is ~20 miles each day on scenic country roads (depending on the exact route). When we arrive we'll set up our tents/hammocks, and then there's options for relaxing at the site, setting up a ping pong tourney, hiking along the Haw River Trail, and/or poking about up town.(**Please note: The cost of the camp site will be ~$20/person.)

This is a beginner-friendly ride with a chill pace, perfect for folks new to bikepacking or looking for a fun local adventure. Seasoned bikepackers are absolutely welcome, too! Overnight gear and bikepacking setup required (though we may be able to rustle up some bags and such if you are in need!).

Friday May 22th, 6-8pm is a Pack & Plan. Open to registered participants and anyone else that is interested in learning more. Come w/ bikes, packed as much as possible, bring anything you need help with. Also please bring some finger food to share. We can do a shakedown ride, if needed. We will gather emergency medical info from participants and a waiver. This is a great opportunity to meet the folks we’ll be riding with, plan for a potential shared dinner/stoves/fuel, and work out any kinks in our set-ups.

Saturday May 23th, we will meet at Back Alley Bikes at 10:30am so we have enough time to load our bags on our bikes and double check our set-ups. We will roll out propmptly at 11am. Feel free to grab any last minute snacks in town and gear from the shop. Once we get to camp, we'll make sure everyone is A-ok with their tent/hammock set-up before we venture off to explore/relax/start prepping for dinner. Dinner options include a fancy meal at a five-star gas station (fo real!), a potential group dinner that we'll make at camp, or dinner on your own. We'll coordinate with the group to hone these options (and will accomodate any dietary needs in the process). (**Also note that the cost of dinner is not included in the $20 for the campsite. You will need to bring extra $ for this.)

We will be camping at Saxapahaw Campground ~20 miles out of town depending on the route, with most of our riding on quiet country rodes. Any bike and tire type is suitable for this adventure, though the area at the campground is gravel, and the bike can be walked if necessary. The camp area has plenty of flat ground, a few trees for hammocks, tables and chairs, camp fire areas, clean bathrooms, hot showers, fresh drinking water and ice, power for charging small electronic devices, wifi, a ping pong shelter, and plenty of area to relax. Riders are responsible for carrying their own clothing (bring layers!), camping gear, water for riding, a dinner plan, plus any stoves/food/cookware for breakfast.

Sunday May 24th, we can make breakfast and coffee/tea together in the morning (or even nab breakfast back in town!) and then ride out around 11am. We expect to arrive at Back Alley Bikes no later than 2:30pm. Bring plenty of snacks for the ride out, though we may very well stop for an ice cream treat on the way back! (**Again note that the costs of breakfast and ice cream are not included in the $20 for the campsite. You will need to bring extra $ for this.)
