BIG BRAW POETRY LAUNCH PARTY—ColinBramwellxCharlesLangxPatrickRomeroMcCafferty
Friends, family, strangers, poets, poetry lovers, regular lovers—whoever you are, you’re invited to our party.
Patrick Romero McCafferty, Charles Lang and Colin Bramwell—three of Scotland’s best up-and-coming poets—are uniting to launch their latest books together. And what better way to celebrate than a night out at Edinburgh’s funnest venue, The Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy! In return for your attendance, Patrick, Charles and Colin will regale you with some of their best new poems—though we’re mainly here to celebrate, so we promise not to read for too long. Once our books have been firmly launched, we’ll charge our glasses, get some tunes on and have a little knees up. Come and hear us do our thing—come stay for a drink or three after.
We’ll all have books to sell on the night of course—however, if you’d like to buy a discount bundle of all three books you can do so on here. Bundlers get free entry. (If the entry price of a regular ticket is prohibitive to you, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.)
Here’s some blurbs to whet your appetite.
The poems in Patrick Romero McCafferty’s debut pamphlet Glass Knot Sun pose perennial questions of land, love, and labour. They do this through the central metaphors of building (from adobe bricks to boat-making) and gathering (from windfall almonds to trawling nets), the poem becoming part record of subsistence, part song.
With a clarion and uncompromising voice, Charles Lang’s first collection The Oasis maps a labyrinth of memories, blending sharp wit with darker undercurrents as he explores identity, masculinity, class and ecology. Lang offers an authentic snapshot of working-class lives, where beauty is found in both the mundane and the extraordinary; in the human and the more-than-human. A sonorous celebration of language and place, The Oasis is a vivid ode to the city’s streets and stories, a testament to resilience and belonging.
Fower Pessoas is the most original work of translation that you will read this year: a bold reimagining of Fernando Pessoa’s poetry. Following his subject’s unique approach to composition, Colin Bramwell puts all four of Pessoa’s heteronyms into a present-day Scots-language vernacular, and so creates a parochial Pessoa for our own times. Readers will be delighted by this witty, emotive and artful reinterpretation of an indispensable European poet.
All welcome - the more the merrier! Come join us for what promises to be a highlight of this year's poetry calendar. You'll hear some of our best and brightest young things strut their stuff; and then, unlike most poetry readings, we can have a genuinely ace party afterwards. Can't say fairer than that.
