Big Band Tuesday- All Ages
The Coda Main Stage will open its doors for a special all-ages Big Band Jazz night on Tuesday, April 7 in support of the Stelly’s Secondary School Jazz Programs featuring a double bill - one of the longest swinging Big Bands on Vancouver Island, The Bayside Big Band and The Stelly's Jazz Band. The highlight finale performance will bring the house down with both bands on stage creating a 40-piece Bigger Band! But we'll still leave room for you to dance!

The Stelly’s Secondary School Jazz Band is made up of 20 students ranging from grade 9-12. Directed by Norbert Ziegler, the band plays about 5 concerts a year in and around the community. They perform a wide variety of music from traditional swing to Latin and even rock tunes. The band is excited to perform at The Coda alongside The Bayside Big Band. Proceeds from this concert’s ticket sales will help fund the Stelly’s jazz programs.
“Playing at a venue like The Coda is a thrill for the kids, and sharing the stage with such a great community-oriented ensemble is so amazing” , says Norbert Ziegler, band teacher at Stelly’s Secondary. “It’s all about giving the kids great experiences and showing them what is possible if they continue playing beyond high school.”
One of the longest running Big Bands on Vancouver Island, The Bayside Big Band, specializes in recreating the instrumental choruses of original jazz standards with an occasional foray into contemporary styles. The band maintains a vintage library of charts from the golden age of swing-dance bands staying true to a 17- piece formula of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, bass, guitar, drums, piano and female vocalist.
“Most of us have been playing for over 40 years, and started in our school music programs.”, says Kryn Zedel, veteran saxophone player for The Bayside Big Band. "This will be our second year doubling up with Stelly's at The Coda, and it’s so rewarding for our band to share a fundraising performance in this great venue with these talented young jazz musicians.”
“When these bands approached the club, we knew we had to make it happen, and are working hard to give the kids an experience they won’t forget- with professional sound and lighting, “Grammy-winning artist treatment” and even a special mocktail menu!”, said Christina Morrison, co-owner of The Coda. “I am a saxophone player and professional dancer, and the incredible experiences like this, created by my high school band teacher really helped inspire me and shape my career.”
Co-Owner of The Coda, AL Smith, graduated from Stelly’s Secondary School and was part of the Stelly’s band. “We are super excited to support the development of younger musicians. It is very important to us.” , said Smith.
