Join us for a family friendly day exploring the Longshaw Estate at the National Trust for a range of nature based arts & craft activities
About this Event

Join Black Girls Hike and the National Trust for a delightful day of nature-inspired fun and creativity! Discover the wonders of the natural world at the beautiful Longshaw Estate in the District.

This event is in partner will be led by BGH & NT volunteers & staff

10.30am - 12.30pm

Activities:

  • Green woodworking – families can make a coat hook by whittling pegs to put in an oak board, and have a go at using the big 2-person hand saw
  • Nature crafts – make a sheep, wooden disk decoration, make a willow star
  • Orienteering in the MDC grounds
  • Activities in the MDC grounds – lawn games, giant Jenga, quoits, badminton
  • Bird spotting – bird feeders attract lots of birds and we have binoculars to lend out

This is a drop-in event, so arrive anytime between 10.30am and 12.00pm. Feel free to explore the activities at your own pace and choose the ones that spark your interest. Volunteers will be on hand to provide guidance and support.


Location:

The event will take place at the Moorland Discovery Centre on site at Longshaw estate National Trust in the Peak District National Park. Look for signs and our friendly staff to guide you.

1pm – 3.00pm

Optional summer nature spotting walk around the estate – led by staff, this will take the group around Longshaw to highlight some of the amazing nature we have and encourage wider exploration of the parkland. We will walk to the pond for nature based activities including pond dipping, mini beasting, and mapping the connectivity between the hairy wood ant nests. Feel free to either stay and play or head home.

Tea and coffee and soft drinks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

This event is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Please respect the environment and leave no trace.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to a covered area.

Start Time: 10.30am

End Time: 3pm

Meeting point will be detailed in the confirmation email.

How much is it? FREE


Difficulty: Easy/Moderate – Walk through Longshaw Estate. Expect some inclines, uneven ground, there are well made paths for part of the walk and some open fields, which will be muddy if there has been rainfall.

Age: Families and children. Babies under 2 do not need to be registered on the event.

Can I come to Black Girls Hike?

As the name suggests, this is a safe space for Black/Mixed Race cis and trans women and non-binary people of Black African and / or Caribbean descent who are comfortable in a space that centres the experiences of Black women. We are not a BAME, POC, BIPOC, WOC, Politically Black or Ally organisation.


What do I need to bring?

Curiosity and a love for nature

Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear

A water bottle and snacksWalking boots / shoes with ankle support essential. No pumps or sliders.
