Breakthroughs Film Festival returns with an exciting line-up of films and industry panels led by female and non-binary filmmakers
About this Event

We like to punish things that don’t fit right. In this lineup, outsiders and misfits retreat into cocoons, wrestle with haunting relationships, navigate the weight of migration, and move between worlds that never fully embrace them. Tender, raw, awkward, and defiant — these films embrace the excessive.

ABOUT THE FILMS

Your Own Flavor Dir. Alisha Ketry

After being ghosted, Renee finds solace with one of the good guys: a puppet named Chompers. As their bond deepens, Chompers takes a chilling turn that forces Renee to wonder if she was friend or prey.

Mawtini (My Homeland) Dir. Fateema Al-Hamaydeh Miller

Nawal, a young grieving Palestinian woman, forms an unlikely friendship with Tanya, an older Indigenous woman, becoming an accomplice to her guerilla gardening on the lawn of their apartment building. Together they battle with middle management to make it to harvest.

Cocoon Dir. Juliet Belisario

After receiving a small gift from a mysterious stranger, a 7-year-old boy begins collecting his own delicate objects, retreating into the quiet sanctuary of his bedroom—his cocoon.

World’s End Dir. Rowan Campbell

Two old friends have a chance meeting right before a server is shut down.

Please Love Me Dir. Lea Rose Sebastianis

An ecstatic ‘one-reeler’ following the last days of a tap-dancer before her final performance.

And Granny Would Dance Dir. Maryam Mohajer

Marmar listens to the stories told by her grandmother’s friends as they play cards. Based on childhood memories and shared stories, 'And Granny Would Dance' is a tale of love, grief and resilience.

Who are you? Who am I? Dir. Frédérique Picard

A young Indigenous woman is preparing to leave her community. This departure makes her reflect on her identity: she feels as much a stranger in her village as in her new town.

On a Sunday at Eleven Dir. Alicia K. Harris

A young Black girl navigates exclusion in her all-white ballet class, reclaiming her beauty and power in an ethereal and jubilant celebration of Blackness.

Signs Dir. Dani Kind

When the ridiculous rules of a tyrant target a young woman, she decides to fight back. It only takes one domino to make them all fall.

Hair! Dir. Sara Jade Alfaro

Sisters Farrah, Miriam, and Layla bond over chai and hair removal, dragging daughters Rina and Nora into witchy rituals that unravel trauma, family baggage, and body hair.
