Fallen Angels exhibition: a Recoverist Month 2024 event that, through the arts, changes the conversation on substance use and recovery.
About this Event

Recoverist = Recovery + Activist

Join us for the launch of a stunning exhibition by Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, celebrating 10 years work in Wigan Borough. ‘Beyond the Surface’ showcases film, video and digital art, including a beautiful new commission ‘Samadhi’. It is a Recoverist Month event that, through the arts, changes the conversation on substance use and recovery.

‘Beyond the Surface’ is an ambitious project by Fallen Angels, presented in partnership with The Turnpike Gallery and Portraits of Recovery as part of Recoverist Month 2024.

The exhibition celebrates 10 years of impactful work by Fallen Angels Dance Theatre in Wigan borough in partnership with Wigan Council, BAC O’Connor and the Turnpike Gallery, and showcases artworks, photography and films, including a newly commissioned work ‘Samadhi’ – an immersive digital dance, light and sound installation, funded by Arts Council England.

Recoverist Month September 2024 is an initiative led by Portraits of Recovery: a pioneering, Manchester-based, visual arts charity.

Mark Prest, Director of PORe, says “We are the UK’s only contemporary visual arts organisation working within this field. By working collaboratively with leading contemporary artists, people in recovery, and communities in recovery, we share the human face of the recovery experience – breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion. Addiction does not discriminate. Addiction is a health, social and cultural issue.”

Claire Morris says “Here at Fallen Angels we support people in recovery across the North-West to transform their lives and share the recovery journey with the wider public, through dance, performance and creativity. Our recovery artists are at the very heart of our work, developing dance skills in our workshops, sharing their stories in research and development, and for some, auditioning and performing in our professional company.”

The Turnpike Gallery is an arts and exhibition space based in Leigh, part of the Turnpike Centre on the Civic Square, and managed by Wigan Council. It is the only purpose-built art gallery in the borough of Wigan and has presented a varied and inspiring programme of visual arts for over 50 years. The gallery provides an accessible, welcoming venue which aims to enrich people’s lives through creative encounters with art and artists.
