Are you a worker or volunteer supporting people in recovery from addiction or those living with mental health conditions?
You are invited to a Recovery Arts professional development training and insights session at the Turnpike Gallery, Leigh on Friday 27th September, 1-3pm.
Inspired by the immersive exhibition Beyond the Surface: Journeys from within by Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, this session will empower you to consider how the arts can be used as an alternative but parallel tool for recovery.
In this free workshop, staff from Fallen Angels & the Turnpike Gallery will lead you through engaging activities and discussion, giving insights into the power of art to enhance the recovery process.
Beyond the Surface profiles 10 years of Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, a groundbreaking north-west arts organisation that uses dance and movement to support recovery, working in the borough of Wigan. The exhibition presents artworks, photography and films, at the centre of which is a new digital dance, sound and light installation called Samadhi.
Featuring a mix of professional and community dancers, this immersive installation is inspired by the real-life experiences of Fallen Angels' north-west recovery communities and showcases dancers who are all themselves in recovery.
It is a collaboration with digital technologist Noel Jones and composer Tom Ashbrook, with startling, augmented reality twists to the performance, including flaming halos and mirror imagery.
In addition, you can view behind the scenes footage of the making of the film and catch a glimpse of the actual costumes worn by the dancers. As well as creating your own movement choreography in the interactive area “Out of this World”.
Other films from the last ten years of Fallen Angels’ work are also on display. These run throughout the day during opening hours Tues-Fri 10-4 and Sat 10-2.
