About this Event
Beyond the Studio: Navigating the Business of Art
Beyond the Studio: Navigating the Business of Art brings together Sydney Frakes, Creator + Director of Threads: The Art Exchange, and Zebedayo Masongo, Founder + Editor of Malindi Press, for an accessible, candid conversation about the professional and legal terrain artists move through, but rarely feel equipped to navigate.
The conversation covers the foundational structures every artist should consider as they build their practice: when to formalize, how copyright and moral rights actually work, and what formal protection actually adds that assumption alone does not. Frakes and Masongo will explore the critical distinction between licensing and selling work outright, what artists should look for and look out for in gallery agreements and commissions, and how to protect creative work in an era of widespread digital reproduction and AI use. In addition, the conversation will also take a longer and important view of what happens to a body of work after an artist is gone, and how families and estates can safeguard that legacy.
Designed for emerging artists and working creatives who want clarity without the jargon, wherever you are in your career.
