About this Event
Talk content and learning objectives
For many non-UK nationals, a criminal conviction is not the end of their legal journey. It some cases it is only the beginning of further legal proceedings.
This CPD session explores how criminal convictions can trigger deportation proceedings, highlighting the complex and often overlooked overlap between criminal and immigration law.
This session will cover:
- Identifying when a criminal conviction may trigger a deportation order
- Understanding the statutory framework for automatic and discretionary deportation
- Advising criminal clients about potential immigration consequences.
- Avoiding common pitfalls when criminal and immigration processes overlap.
This talk is beneficial for both criminal and immigration practitioners. Criminal practitioners are often the first professionals who can identify when a criminal conviction may carry serious immigration consequences for a non-UK national client.
Aimee Cole called to the bar in 2025. As a solicitor Aimee specialised in the areas of Immigration, Asylum and Human Rights for over 10 years. She has extensive experience in asylum, immigration and deportation appeals.
During her career as a solicitor Aimee also gained experience in criminal practice where she regularly appeared in Sheriff Courts. Since becoming an advocate Aimee has gained broader criminal experience.
The talk will last about an hour with the opportunity for questions and refreshments afterwards. The event is eligible for at least one hour CPD.
