Auspire – Australia Day Council WA, in partnership with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, presents an Inspiring Australians’ Lunch with special guest, Neale Daniher AO, during his only visit to Perth this year.Neale Daniher AO is an AFL legend, playing with Essendon FC before coaching the Melbourne Demons and relocating to WA to join the coaching team at Fremantle Dockers.
In 2008, Neale became general manager of the West Coast Eagles, until 2013, when tragically, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).
Since his diagnosis, Neale, with the unwavering support of his family, has been battling the debilitating effects of the disease in the public eye, tirelessly campaigning and raising awareness of MND as co-founder of FightMND, a charity that has raised and invested over $115 million into medical research. The annual Big Freeze event at the MCG embodies Neale’s ethos of turning adversity into an opportunity for celebration and hope.
Neale has lived with the cruel disease for more than 10 years, defying the average life expectancy of just 27 months. With amazing courage and relentless drive, he is dedicated to helping prevent the suffering of those who’ll be diagnosed in the future.
For his incredible fight and resilience, Neale was named the 2025 Australian of the Year.
