Way for Women invites you to join us for ‘Beyond the Binary - a journey through culture and history’! Gender is often misunderstood as a universal truth treated in the same way all around the globe. In reality, it is rather a cultural belief that there are only two distinct and opposite genders. The way we perceive and perform gender varies from culture to culture, and it has varied and evolved throughout history. While the words, such as ‘non-binary’, ‘gender fluid’ or ‘gender nonconforming’ are new, living beyond the gender binary is certainly not. Our ancestors have existed outside the gender binary for centuries.
During this event, our speaker and community member, Weronika Krupa, a.k.a Cherry Vodka (drag name), will take us on a fascinating journey spinning across centuries and cultures. We will learn the history and examples of gender nonconformity, such as Two-Spirit People of the indigenous peoples of the Americas or Muxe, a third gender of the Zapotec culture of Oaxaca, Mexico.
We will also have the chance to deconstruct the social and political beliefs which we grew up with, and learn more about the drag culture through the prism of Cherry Vodka’s experience as a drag king.
This event begins with an engaging introduction that will:
- Define gender as a concept
- Demystify the pronoun dilemma and debunk harmful myths about gender
- Highlight the richness and the beauty of gender nonconformity around the world.
After the introduction, we’ll break into small groups for thoughtful conversations. Guided by key discussion questions, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Explore gender identity from different perspectives
- Discuss how media and gender stereotypes shape societal expectations and experience
- Address issues of gender
- Examine your own experience and identity.
This is a welcoming space for learning, reflection, and open dialogue. Whether you’re new to the community or deeply engaged, your voice matters. Let’s come together to share perspectives, challenge assumptions, and inspire action for a more equal and inclusive world!
The event is free of charge and open for everyone!
See you in Bonobo, on March 15th at 15:30!
