About this Event

Beyond Safety Planning: Deepening Therapy With Depressed and Suicidal Teens

Many clinicians feel confident assessing suicide risk in adolescents but still wonder what to do therapeutically once safety has been addressed.

This training is specifically for counselors and social workers (student, pre-licensed and licensed) and focuses on how to engage depressed and suicidal teens in meaningful therapeutic work after assessment and safety planning are complete.

We will explore experiential and attachment-informed interventions that help adolescents who:

• shut down or say “I don’t know”
• struggle to name their internal experience
• express hopelessness or emotional numbness
• minimize or intellectualize their distress
• feel disconnected from parents or support systems

This workshop assumes participants are already familiar with risk assessment, safety planning, and mandated reporting requirements. The focus is on deepening the therapeutic process with teens experiencing depression and suicidal ideation.
Participants Will Learn

• Ways to respond when teens shut down or disengage
• Experiential techniques that help adolescents access emotion
• How hopelessness and suicidal ideation often emerge from attachment dynamics
• Interventions that move therapy beyond problem-solving into emotional processing
• Strategies for helping teens articulate their internal experience
