About this Event

In the “Beyond Buttercream” series of classes, Laura Larson of Laura’s Custom Cakes introduces students to a variety of cake-decorating techniques that go beyond traditional buttercream. These classes are designed to expand your skill set by exploring other methods and materials that add depth, texture, visual interest and a touch of magic to your designs.

In this class, you will use buttercream icing as your base, learning techniques to create a soft, snowy texture. We will explore piping and finishing methods that add dimension and movement, creating a canvas that sets the stage for a magical winter wonderland.

From there, the class moves beyond buttercream into the world of isomalt. You’ll learn the fundamentals of working with this versatile sugar substitute, including safety, cooking, coloring, molding, and proper storage. Using isomalt, you will create shimmering trees and snowflake lollipops with edible images—decorations that add height, clarity, and a magical, frozen effect. These techniques open the door to striking, show-stopping designs that elevate cakes far beyond the traditional.

You will take away a stunning winter wonderland theme cake—and more importantly, the confidence and skills to incorporate buttercream and isomalt techniques into your future creations.


Recommended Skill Level:

This class is designed for students who have prior experience working with buttercream and are comfortable with the leveling, stacking and crumb coating cakes. It is intentionally packed with multiple techniques, making it ideal for decorators who are ready to expand their skill set Beyond Buttercream and refine their craftsmanship in a single, focused session. Participants must be at least 16 years old.


Register for this class and receive:

  • In-person, step-by-step instruction
  • A 2 layer crumb coated 5” cake
  • All supplies and tools for use during class.
  • A box in which to take your finished cake home.

We will be working with boiling sugar, so please wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes. You will be provided with gloves to protect your hands.

Additional classes will be added to the Beyond Buttercream series, giving you the chance to continue building your skills with a variety of mediums and decorating techniques with each new class.


Meet Your Instructor:

Laura Larson is the owner of Laura’s Custom Cakes, a licensed home-based bakery. She decorates cakes and other sweet treats professionally, and is a member of the Fran’s crew. In addition to her passion for turning sugar into art, she loves sharing her excitement with others through teaching. She leads classes for aspiring bakers, corporations, government agencies, and community organizations—helping individuals and teams learn new skills, spark creativity, and connect through the joy of cake decorating. All The Details:

  • Age Level: 16+
  • Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • All supplies and tools are provided for use during class.
  • We will provide a box to take your cake home in
  • The class may be a little messy so we recommend bringing an apron.
  • If you have long hair, you may want to tie it back.
  • Price is per person. A ticket must be purchased for each individual attending the class.
  • Class requires a minimum of 4 students and there is a maximum of 8 students. In the event of insufficient enrollment, you will receive a full refund.
  • Class will run approximately 3 hours. Please note that the class is hands-on and may run over or under schedule.

Cancellation Policy:

Changes and cancellations...we know life happens so we try our best to be flexible while being fair to our instructors who purchase supplies and bake for each student. Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made at least 5 days prior to the class. If you need to cancel after 5 days but at least 48 hours in advance, we can offer you a credit for a future class. We cannot offer any credits for cancellations within 48 hours of the scheduled class.
