PRiME Advanced: Beyond Bias: Fostering Inclusive clinical learning environments
Description:
Creating inclusive learning environments for our undergraduates is vital to promote student engagement and achieve high academic outcomes; and reduce any barriers or disadvantages that may impede learning experiences . Our student populations are diverse and have varied needs, and we should strive to promote these differences to ensure our teaching and mentoring supports this. In this 3-hour interactive session, we will discuss key concepts of equality, diversity, and inclusivity, how this can impact our learning environments, why this is important, and how we can aim to promote inclusivity and opportunity of learners. We will also seek to recognise our own biases, discuss real student experiences, and aim to empower you as an educator.
This session will give you skills and knowledge in:
- The key concepts of equality, diversity, and inclusivity, what this means in real terms, and ways we can ensure we are creating positive and inclusive learning environments in our clinical settings.
-The key concepts of ‘micro-aggressions’ and ‘casual discrimination’, what this may look like, and ways we can recognise and manage our own biases
- Thinking about how these concepts can impact student’s learning and outcomes, and possible solutions which aim to mitigate these.
