About this Event
How can we reclaim radical publishing as a tactic for creating counter-cultures of knowledge? How can foothoofnotes disrupt the narrative? How might a photocopy seed new ideas? When might a mixtape intervene in a system?
Join artist Becky Lyon with special guest, friend and publishing practitioner Heiba Lamara (OOMK, Rabbits Road Press, Kilburn Print Workshop) for a mischievous morning of leafing through ideas, paper play, sticker-storying, conversation and community. This workshop is inspired by Muntjac, a mini library for slowly studying ideas of ecological care on the margins. It forms part of Turf Projects’ Spring-Summer Tending programme.
About your hosts:
Becky Lyon is an artist and researcher of mixed British and Jamaican heritage exploring the politics of ecology in England. She is interested in art as a method of understanding nature and practicing more equitable and flourishing worlds. She has a particular focus on the senses and is currently researching for her PhD, "Touch as method for critical ecological stewardship in England at Goldsmiths. Her work takes the form of tactile objects, sensory installations, hand-made moving images, audio experiments and publications. She runs Ground Provisions, a ‘schooled-by-the-forest’ for adults; The Department of Artecology which is an experimental space for transdisciplinary exchange in the conservation sector; is a Volunteer Ranger for London National Park City and a member of the All The Elements network.
About Muntjac
Come cosy up with a good mixtape and read between the leaves at Muntjac, a mini archive and space for slow study exploring taking care of nature on in the margins.
The project was prompted into being by encounters with the ‘invasive’ muntjac deer inspiring thinkings and writings around belonging and Britishness, xenophobia and conservation bias in England. For Tending at Turf, a diverse set of voices join the conversation to share how other knowledges, usually marginalised at the edges can enrich, trouble and otherwise make other forms of nature stewardship possible.
Posters, pamphlets, zines, stickers, chapbooks, flyers, badges and cassette tapes, taking cues from the undercurrents of publishing form a micro studio for reading, reflecting and contributing to the conversation.
Expect to encounter contributions from: the Black Seeds Network and Out On The Land; All The Elements and HOOF; Black Geographers and ESEA Green Lions among many more.
