BETTER BUTTER
A collection of non-fiction plays
Better Butter returns to Jump-Start Theater featuring two new ensemble members and all new plays!
Better Butter is a live show that features a multicultural ensemble and a continuously changing “play-list” of original and true stories, experiences and cathartic points of view performed onstage in one hour (mas o menos) in hopes of building stronger human connections. New ensemble members include Maddie Ramos and Marcus McEvoy with OGs - Gio Lugo, Sarah Tijerina, Joyous Windrider Jiménez and show creator Clint Taylor, plus technical director Madison Cardenas and stage manager Bree Rubio. The performances will encompass comedy, tragedy, joy, fear and everything in between. Better Butter is inspired by the New York Neo-Futurists’ The Infinite Wrench. What sets this collective apart are the unique and diverse voices of the ensemble, and the particular essence of San Antonio.
BETTER BUTTER Bios
Clint Taylor is the creator of Better Butter and is a multi cultural Chicano who has been collaborating artistically with individuals and communities for over 25 years. As a performer, writer and producer they work with organizations and other artists to strengthen, restore and preserve communities and amplify voices not often represented in the mainstream.
Joyous Windrider Jiménez is a writer, artist, and educator who has been presenting her original poetry, theatre, visual art, and videos in venues around her city since 2009. A trauma-informed self-care coach, she designs workshops to help community members learn how to regulate their nervous system towards growth and change.
Born and raised on San Antonio’s south and west side, Sarah Tijerina (any pronouns) credits their artistic and teaching career to values of community, resistance, and service that were instilled through her upbringing. Identity is a major influence in her poetry, scripts, and performance art, as her work explores her relationship with Texas, femininity, injustice, and “nepantla”, the “in-between-ness”.
Giovan Lugo, but you can call him Gio because it’s short and sweet just like him, is a Texas State University alumnus with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre. Beyond his academic achievements, Gio is a prominent local drag performer recognized as Duva Lynn, the sweetest piece of Mexican candy you’ll ever meet. Under the guise of Duva Lynn, Gio has established SpecDRAGular, an organization dedicated to showcasing the talents of drag artists throughout Texas.
Marcus McEvoy(He/Him) is a San Antonio based multimedia artist, writer and curator who has used their talents to assist in the creation of impactful organized events & social media impressions. Their main aspiration is to share/uplift the art and activist voices of their San Antonio community, while continuing to produce new works of their own through poetry, videography and events. Anchored in the fight for injustices & freedoms to all oppressed peoples of the world, they believe that art is a powerful tool for pushing the world towards healthy vulnerability & abundance.
Maddie Ramos(she/her) is a queer artist and filmmaker. She draws inspiration from growing up on the Westside of San Antonio and being raised in a multicultural background (Filipinx-Chicanx). Her mediums include devised theater, scriptwriting, poetry/spoken word, performance art, ephemeral installation, photography, and digital mixed media, and she combines them in work that is playful and nuanced.
New to Better Butter and San Antonio as of this year, Bree Rubio has professionally been in the culinary and pastry field for over 10 years. They are shifting to learn and grow in other artistic endeavors including theater arts with an interest in tech. Bree is happy to be finding their place in the Better Butter family.
Madison Cardenas is a Chicanx visual and technical theatre artist and activist/organizer with deep roots in San Antonio’s Southeast community. Her diversified experiences have shaped her role as a community-based educator and her goal is to encourage young people to pursue the happiness that comes from moments of creativity and free expression.
