Led by Georgia Court, this book club reads what lasts, not just the latest. This month: an award-winning American comedic masterpiece.
About this Event

The Best of the Backlist Book Club is led by Georgia Court, meant for reading what lasts, not just what's latest. March's selection is A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole - the cult classic that turns New Orleans into a comic carnival of chaos. Its unforgettable antihero, Ignatius J. Reilly, is a medievalist philosopher trapped in a hot-dog vendor's body, railing against modernity and his long-suffering mother. Wildly funny, deeply strange, and full of tragicomic brilliance, Toole's posthumous masterpiece proves that great literature can be both absurd and profound.
We will meet in person at our store location at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $17, which includes a copy of A Confederacy of Dunces to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

John Kennedy Toole (December 17, 1937 – March 26, 1969) was an American novelist from New Orleans, Louisiana, whose posthumously published novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. At 16 in 1954, he wrote his first novel, The Neon Bible, which he shelved in the same year, not finding a willing publisher; he later dismissed it as "adolescent". Toole was a successful and popular professor, first at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now ULL), at Hunter College, and finally in New Orleans. Having persuaded Simon & Schuster, however, to accept A Confederacy of Dunces, he was unable to resolve editorial disputes. Due in part to the novel's failure, he suffered from paranoia and depression, dying by suicide at the age of 31.
