About this Event

The Best Adapted Book Club focuses on books on their way to becoming award-season films. November's pick is Train Dreams by National Book Award-winning author Denis Johnson. Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West, this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. The film stars Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Clifton Collins Jr., Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy. It is scheduled to stream on Netflix worldwide on November 21, 2025.

We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $17, which is the cost of your copy of Train Dreams to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

It tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Denis Johnson (1949–2017) is the author of eight novels, one novella, one book of short stories, three collections of poetry, two collections of plays, and one book of reportage. His novel Tree of Smoke won the 2007 National Book Award.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Roxanne Baker hails from the mecca of film, Rochester, NY, where she introduced films at the George Eastman House. Since her arrival in Florida, she has moderated film talk backs at Burns Court and taught Film Appreciation atSarasota Art Museum through Osher Life Long Learning.
