About This Class

This class is for the complete beginner or for the person who is just curious about what cake decorating is all about! If you have limited experience with cake decorating, found yourself frustrated DIY, or if you're trying to have fun with family or friends, this is the class for you! We will be doing a fun Valentine’s Day theme cake that tastes amazing and will look even better once you’ve completed your decorating!

We provide everything you will need from cake, icing, sprinkles, and a box to take your awesome creations home in - we just need YOU! Each to-be-baker gets a 4 inch bento cake and all the tools necessary to knock this class out of the park! Everything is prepped right before class – so no baking or icing mixing required. Just decorate! The cake flavors will be vanilla or chocolate so definately drop us a line if you have your heart set on one or the other.

This class is on 14Feb2026 and started at 12:00 PM and ends at 2:00PM sharp so we can have enough time to decorate and answer along the way. Come by yourself, bring your best friend, or bring the family - we have seating for up to 12 people! It's a blast whether you're coming with a friend, family member, or solo!

This class is good for ages (5+ child friendly), but if you'd like to leave the kiddos at home, purchase an add-on kit (more on that below)! The kits are great for kids at home, plus - we'll send you the class PowerPoint so you can teach them yourself!

Location/Parking

The class will be held at the Riverbend Lofts in Kansas City, MO located at 200 Main Street. The room will be the event recreation room right at the front of the building. The building does require a coded entry, so we'll keep an eye out for attendees and let you in ourselves. The closest landmarks are the Cycle City Store and River Bluff Brewing if you need a few more tips.

Nervous about the parking situation? Don’t be! Parking is pretty easy: Non metered street spots have posted signs and are free on the weekends (unless otherwise posted). Metered spots are not free on the weekend and you can pay conveniently via app. Free parking exists along the entire trolley line and this location is RIGHT on the trolley line if you would rather park anywhere else in downtown (maybe grab a girls lunch afterward ;-) . Because we're right on the trolley line you don't have to stress as much about finding parking right next to the building. The trolley runs every 15 minutes.

DIY Add On Kits

Order your bento class kit and take the class home with you to teach a child or friend! These class kits come with everything you'll use in class! We have take home instructions so you can have fun at home too! Cake Class DIY Kits are created before your class, and you'll pick them up and take them with you after class.

How long can a kit last? At room temperature or refrigerator your kit will only last 3-5 days. Freezing cakes keep them fresh for a long time, but I recommend using your kit as soon as possible - ideally in the first week after you've taken it home. If you do need to store it in the frezer make sure to plastic wrap the box to keep moisture out.

FAQS

What will I be doing in the class?

Besides having the most fun ever? We will be going over some cake facts, decorating techniques and you will be decorating your very own benot cake that you will take home with you that day.

Can I purchase an additional take-home kit?

Yes! Many parents or practicing hobbyists purchase additional class kits to take home and re-do the classes. You can purchase an add-on kit during check-out. Your kit will be available at the end of your class - so don't forget it! If you’re skipping class and just ordering the kit – swing by anytime during class to sneak in and pick it up – it’ll be labeled with your name!

Do I need to know how to bake?

Nope! No baking history required. We will have the cakes pre-made for you along with the icing already mixed and colored. Have a little decorating experience under your belt… er… apron? Come on too! I can help with questions on icing mixing, cake issues, and more!

What will we learn in class?

You’ll learn what goes into preparing royal icing, the value of different icing consistencies – we’ll touch on tips and tricks to make your cakes look even better than they taste (and they taste good)! You’ll also learn different decorating techniques depending on the class theme such as marbling, outlining, wet-on-wet, brush embroidery, and painting. Or hey – go off script and make your own designs – it’s your class!

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a smile! Everything will be provided for you including my (rather tasty) cake. All you need to do is join us and have fun! Messy decorator? You can bring your own apron or just wear easy-to-wash clothing. Oh – and bring your phone – I love photos!

What age is best for classes?

Our classes are for almost any age! From youngsters to grandparents - come on in and have some cookie fun with us! Our in-person classes are great for any age; however, kiddos under 16 will need a parent taking the class as well. If you think your child may be too young to enjoy the in-person class, purchase an additional take-home kit!

Can just my child take the class?

We ask that all parents also attend the classes with their children under 16. For children over 16, you can drop off your child to take the class and return to pick-up in 1.5 hours. Due to space restrictions, we do not have room for parents to stand by and watch their children in class. So unfortunately, your adorable kiddo cannot take the class alone. A parent must also purchase a ticket and take the class as well - but I promise you this - it's super fun for all involved!

What will I bring home?

By the end of the class, you will have created a gorgeous cake ready to eat on the spot or save for later, along with some practice sheets and tip sheets for you to take home and keep on practicing.

Can I sign up as an individual or as a group?

You can sign up either as an individual, with a friend, or with a whole group. The more the merrier! We are limited to a total of 12 seats per class, so definitely sign up ASAP!

Where are the classes located?

This class will be held at Riverbend Lofts (rec room) in Kansas City, MO - that address is 200 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64105

About the Upscale Oven

Who doesn’t love getting out and doing something fun while also eating delicious cake!? That’s what The Upscale Oven is all about!

A little about me – I’ve been baking as long as I remember. I started with cake decorating as a kiddo – and I’ve not put down an icing bag since . My favorite cookie themes to decorate are gnomes, animals, and I love metallic food paint and edible glitter – but I can do pretty much anything if icing’s involved. I love chocolate on chocolate cake the most and I get reallly artsy into painting and more on cakes. I love what I do –who wouldn’t love making cookies?! It’s the sweetest job in the world!

Oh yeah - I have classes throughout the year which highlight different themes so make sure to sign up for our newsletter so you can get in on the cookie action!

Cancelation / Refund / Sick Policy

Sick and Showing Symptoms Before Class:

We understand how much of a let down it is to be sick, but we have to follow all KCMO health department policies which prohibit sick people from handling food around others that will eat the food. We value everyone and understand not everyone has a robust immune system and don't want to get anyone sick.

We ask that you do not attend class sick. We do not offer refunds for sickness, but we're more than happy to try to route your cookies to you and send all the things you could possibly need to decorate your cookies.

Cancellation Policy:

If you contact us to cancel 1 week before class we can issue a refund. You signed up, something changed, we get it, and are happy to work with your schedule. Sorry, we know, but by that time we likely bought all the handy dandy supplies and started working on getting you all the goodies. Please note the ticketing platfrom charges it's own service fees. Those are non-refundable. You would receive the overall payment-ticketing platform fees/taxes as applicable.

You Don't Show Up or Email Prior To Class:

If I do not hear from you before your class’s start time, and you do not show up for class there's not much I can do. No call no show results in I may let someone else buy any DIY kits you purchased so their kiddos can have them. If you are at least able to email, call, text to let me know you cannot come last minute I won't issue a refund but I can try to get your cookies to you :-)
