In 2025, Ben was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM), a serious heart condition that caused a sudden and dramatic decline in his daily life. HOCM causes the heart muscle to thicken and stiffen, restricting blood flow, creating blockages, triggering dangerous arrhythmias, and significantly increasing the risk of sudden cardiac death. After a year of specialist visits, medications, and treatments, doctors determined that open‑heart surgery would be the next critical step, with a future heart transplant likely. Ben will be unable to work for several months following surgery.
