About this Event
The Race Equality Staff Network at the University of Strathclyde is hosting an event celebrating the University's Diamond Jubilee, coinciding with Black History Month. The 31st of October is the UN International Day for World Cities, and the event will focus on a panel discussion exploring the concept of "belonging" within the city of Glasgow. This celebration will bring together diverse voices from across the university and the wider community to reflect on themes of identity, belonging, and inclusion in Glasgow.
The panel includes representatives from third-sector organisations that work closely with refugee and asylum-seeking communities, providing a platform to discuss their experiences and the challenges they encounter. We aim to create a dialogue that reflects the diverse journeys of those who call Scotland their home, to better understand their experiences of belonging, integration, and identity formation, in what may be a new cultural landscape.
The panel will also include representatives from third-sector organisations that work closely with New Scots, providing a platform to discuss and share their stories.
The panel will be chaired by Dr Navan Govender - Lecturer at School of Education, University of Strathclyde
The panellists that are joining us are:
Angie Mwafulirwa - Founder of Sharpen Her: the African Women’s Network
Asma Abdalla - Founder of Empower Women for Change
Selina Hales - Founder of Refuweegee
Omar Sheikh - Founder of Colourful Heritage

Strathclyde Origin Map Project
This event coincides with our map launch. Throughout October we will have a world map located on level 3 of the Learning and Teaching Building (across from Grab and Go). We would like to invite university staff to mark their country of origin/home country, creating a visual representation of the rich international diversity that makes up our community. For those unable to visit the physical map, we have created a digital alternative using Google Maps, where staff can anonymously add their country of origin. Contribute the the digital map.
For more information about the network please visit the RESN (Race Equality Staff Network) webpage.
