Organizations Gather for a Conference Uniting Faith Communities, Substance Use, Mental Health, and Overdose CrisisNon-profits, faith communities, mental health organizations, and recovery coalitions are collaborating to foster important discussions on diversity in tackling overdose, substance use disorder, and spiritual and mental well-being.
Galveston Island, TX - Belly of the Whale Conference Galveston will be hosted at the Moody Methodist Church on Galveston Island. This 4th annual event is a collaborative effort by the Spiritual Care Network, ADA Women’s Center, and Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC), in partnership with other local nonprofit organizations. Spiritual Care Network has "Widened the Bridge," reaching out to the community, mental health professionals, faith leaders, and sober living organizations.
Expert speakers will cover topics related to mental wellness, opiate use disorder, overdose prevention with Narcan, and finding suitable help for other compulsive behavioral patterns.
Conference co-chairs are Kimberly Beaty, LCSW-S, and Jacqueline Martinez, RN, RSPS. Martinez is the Executive Director of the Spiritual Care Network, The GNZ, serves on the HOPE Drug Court of Galveston County, and leads ROSC Galveston County. Beaty is the Executive Director for the ADA Women’s Center in Galveston.
The conference acts as a vital platform for connecting community members with services. Guests will have the chance to visit resource tables featuring representatives from nonprofit organizations, treatment centers, counselors, hospitals, and other community services and resources. Mental health professionals can earn continuing education credits for attending, including ethics credits.
