About this Event
Belfast Rebel Harp delves into the complex history of the Irish harp and its bards, exploring how their influential role as cultural custodians and political commentators was systematically suppressed and driven to the brink of extinction. Written by Ursula Burns (‘The Dangerous Harpist’) from Belfast, this hybrid non-fiction novella fuses storytelling, poetry, and sharp social commentary. Blending personal memoir with historical insight, it reflects both the troubled and romanticised aspects of Ireland. This is a passionate call to reclaim the lost oral and aural traditions of Ireland’s master harpers — and to reignite a culture that once moved kings, queens, chieftains, and warriors. Deeply rooted in the heart of Belfast, the book seeks to ground this ancient tradition in the city’s architecture and spirit as Belfast is on the cusp of reclaiming its powerful harping identity.
