Eclectic indie rock and pop collective Beirut have combined styles ranging from the pre-rock vocal era and Eastern European Romani music to plaintive and whimsical indie folk with lo-fi psychedelic experimentations. The brainchild of American multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon, the project debuted in 2006 with Gulag Orkestar. After refining their sound over the next few albums while retaining a diverse musical base, Beirut's fourth album, 2015's No No No, became their first effort to reach the Top 50 of the Billboard 200. They continued to find success both at home and abroad on subsequent wide-ranging outings, such as Gallipoli (2019) and the collection Artifacts (2022). Named for the Norwegian island where much of it was recorded in relative seclusion, 2023's Hadsel found Condon relying heavily on a church organ and baritone ukulele as well as modular synths and brass for its idiosyncratic sound. He returned to a more broad-based palette for 2025's A Study of Losses, a set of songs and instrumentals commissioned by a Swedish circus.
