Beginning Landscape with Oil Paint

Learn to paint a landscape using oil paints!
About this Event

In this one day workshop we will be working from landscape photo references. This class will show you the process taken to develop a landscape piece. Work step by step with Samantha as you paint from the same image to create a larger painting. The start of class will begin with an hour demo where you will watch Samantha work as she talks you through each step. Following the demo each student will then begin on their own piece, while Samantha walks around assisting students. We will then take a lunch break. Following the lunch break we will start up with another demo to show how to complete the painting. For the last hour students will work on their own paintings, once again having Samantha walk around assisting each student individually. A critique will conclude the day, giving painters insight on how to continue to develop their piece at home.

If you are interested in learning color mixing prior to the landscape class, join us for Samantha's color mixing workshop on June 13th. Combining these two classes is a great way to build the skills needed for your oil practice at home!

Knowledge of the medium itself is helpful, however not necessary.

When: Saturday August 29th from 9AM to 4PM

Age: 18 +

Skill Level: Beginner

Price: $250

Optional Paint/Medium Fee: $60 - You can bring your own paints and medium, however if you do not have any and would prefere that Samantha brings you some, you can purchase the paint/medium ticket below. Items you would still need to bring include:

  • 2 to 3 canvases : it is nice to have a few to choose from- 16”x20”, 20”x20”, 18”x24” etc)Your choice of preferred canvas surface, options include but not limited to:•stretched canvas•canvas board•canvas paper taped to board•oil paper•gessoed/primed board
  • Brushes- I use Rosemary & Co Eclipse Long Filbert, as well as some Da Vinci flats. Bring a mix to experiment with. Please think about including at a minimum a #10, #8, #4, #2, this is a good range of brushes to have when working quickly.
  • palette knife
  • palette or palette paper
  • cleaning jar with Gamsol (Gamblin Odorless Spirits) Please do not use anything else, the fumes are too much
  • cleaning rag ( an old t-shirt works great!)

Paint :

*If you do not already your own paint and you will be purchasing specifically for this class I have marked the colors I recommend buying in a 150 ml tube in Bold otherwise, a 37 ml tube is all you need. Paint for the course of the workshop is available for an additional fee. I personally use Utrecht Brand Artists’Oil Colors. I find that it is a good quality paint at an affordable price. If you want to spend more money- Vasari, Old Holland, and Winsor & Newton are all high quality.

Paint colors to bring:

Titanium White

Lemon Yellow

Cadmium Yellow Medium

Yellow Ochre

Cadmium Red Light and/or Medium

Permanent Rose and/or Quinacridone Rose

Alizarin Crimson

Sap Green

Phthalo Blue

Ultramarine Blue

Burnt Umber

Burnt Sienna (this color can be easily mixed but it’s nice to have ready made)

Plein Air set-up Including:

•Gamasol only! (Gamblin Odorless Spirits) Please do not use anything else, the fumes are too much!

•Brush cleaning canister (I prefer metal with a brush cleaning grate located inside, the glass jars with coils do not work well)

•Brushes- I use Rosemary & Co Eclipse Long Filbert, as well as some Da Vinci flats. Bring a mix to experiment with. Please think about including at a minimum a #10, #8, #4, #2, this is a good range of brushes to have when working quickly.

•Palette knife

•Medium (I use Neo-megilp by Gamblin). Liquin is known to yellow and cause “artists cough”

•Palette or palette paper

•Rag (better than paper towels, plus creates less waste) I use old T-shirts. •Always a good to have painters tape handy

Location: Cura Contemporary in the Edes Building | 17395 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill CA, 95037

About the Artist:

Samantha Buller is a much loved and collected oil painter based in Petaluma, CA. She received a BFA from The Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Originally from the Bay Area, her work reflects the beautiful light and modernism that is found in northern California. Her love of color drives her work. She is inspired by work created by the late Wayne Thiebaud, especially for his paint application, attention to color and composition. She is also inspired by the work of Raimonds Straprans for his layering techniques. Her work has been featured in the Hall of Justice in downtown San Francisco, in businesses, several galleries, and has even had her work featured on a prime time television show. In 2013, Southwest Art Magazine named Buller as one of 2013's Young Artists to Watch.
