A hands-on workshop to learn, care and create Kokedama led by bonsai artist, Danny Coffey.
About this Event

Kokedama is an art form similar to and often associated with the art of bonsai.

The word Kokedama is Japanese and literally translates to ‘moss-ball’.

In this workshop we learn the necessary materials, care and techniques required to create live moss compositions that can grow into a miniature environment.

Each student will be able to take home their creation. Additionally we’ll have some small plants and cuttings available to add to your kokedama. With proper care these kokedama will be able to grow and evolve for many years! No experience necessary.

Attendees will want to take notes, so please bring note pad and pen as there will be specific care instructions.

Class limited to 20 participants. 2 hours.

Cost: $45 includes professional instruction + materials. Students leave with their own kokedama!

Pre-registration is required.

About the instructor:

Daniel Coffey is bonsai artist based in Asheville, NC .

Daniel received his primary training during a multi-year apprenticeship under Junichiro Tanaka, fourth-generation owner of Aichien Bonsai Nursery in Nagoya Japan.

Upon returning to the States, he went directly into an internship at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C., under former museum curator, Jack Sustic.

As an instructor, he openly shares his experience and techniques with students of all skill levels. In 2018, he became a member of the River Arts District Artists Association (RADA).

He has continued to grow a personal body of bonsai work over the years, lovingly cared for at his private home-based nursery in Rutherford County, NC. Some examples can be seen on Instagram @treethepeople and at Treethepeople.com
