Beginner-Friendly Ikebana: Beginning the Year with Flowers & Tea

This introductory class offers a gentle and practical entry into Japanese flower arrangement (Ikebana), focusing on the Moribana style, which emphasizes openness, balance, and the relationship between flowers, water, and space.

Rather than memorizing rigid forms, participants will explore how Ikebana values line, negative space, seasonality, and intention, allowing simple materials to become expressive, meditative compositions—easily adaptable to everyday life and any seasonal flowers.

An overview of Ikebana as a Japanese art form—its philosophy, aesthetics, and relevance in contemporary daily life and home settings.

The instructor will introduce the historical background of Ikebana and demonstrate a Moribana arrangement step-by-step, explaining core concepts such as:

• Shin, Soe, and Hikae (the three main structural lines)
• The use of space and water
• Seasonal awareness and material selection

Participants will create their own Moribana arrangement using provided flowers and tools, applying the principles learned during the demonstration.

A relaxed group discussion followed by individual feedback and gentle redesign guidance from the instructor, helping participants refine their work and deepen their understanding.

The class is taught by an Ikebana instructor with:

• 3 years of formal training in Ikebana Saga Goryu
• 2 years of practice in Sogetsu Ryu

With experience across both traditional and modern schools, the instructor emphasizes adaptability and personal expression, encouraging students to apply Ikebana principles to any flowers, in any space, as part of daily life.
