When the sun goes down and the stars come out, the Los Angeles Philharmonic fills the Hollywood Hills with the dark and ominous swoosh of strings from Beethoven’s Egmont. Giedrė Šlekytė, the up-and-coming conductor from Lithuania, kicks the overture into high gear as she takes off on a vigorously triumphant fanfare of heroic brass and woodwinds. The night continues with Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii—who has been blind since birth and is affectionately known by his fans as “Nobu”—performing a dramatic and majestic concerto, followed by Beethoven’s revolutionary “Eroica” Symphony.
