What You’ll Experience
Enjoy a laid-back, social workshop where you’ll learn the fundamentals of bonsai while sipping a beer. This class is designed to be fun, beginner-friendly, and informative.
You’ll learn how to:
- Pot and style your own bonsai tree
- Trim and shape for long-term growth
- Maintain your tree in the South Texas climate
- Build ramification and develop a dense canopy
Your Tree
Each participant will receive a Portulacaria afra (Dwarf Jade) bonsai—an ideal species that thrives in heat and humidity, making it perfect for our region. Great for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.
Hands-On Instruction
Gilbert will guide you step-by-step through the entire process:
- Removing your tree from its nursery container
- Root pruning and preparation
- Repotting into a bonsai container
- Securing (tie-down technique)
- Proper trimming and styling techniques

Gilbert Cantu, a Corpus Christi native, has been cultivating Portulacaria afra bonsai for over 24 years. With a deep passion for art, bonsai, and environmental stewardship, he shares his expertise with a growing audience on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Gilbert is always eager to connect, educate, and help others on their bonsai journey.
