About this Event
Beer may seem simple at first glance: just grain, hops, yeast, and water. Yet small changes in ingredients and brewing choices can create an incredible range of flavours, from crisp and refreshing to rich, roasty or even fruity.
In this interactive talk, zythologist (beer connoisseur) Joke Van Loon of Tasting Talks takes you on a guided journey through the world of beer using a curated selection of beers brewed at Great Lakes Brewery. Through tasting, storytelling, and hands-on flavour exploration, you’ll discover how beer is made, why different styles taste the way they do, and how to approach beer tasting with confidence.
Through a guided tasting flight, we’ll explore:
• How malt influences colour, sweetness, body, and roasted flavours
• How hops create bitterness, aroma, and character, from subtle to intensely expressive
• How yeast and fermentation shape flavour, texture, and complexity
• How brewing choices influence style, balance, and drinkability
Along the way, you’ll sample a range of Great Lakes beers, from approachable and refreshing to richer, more characterful styles, each selected to highlight a different aspect of brewing and flavour.
Designed for beginners and curious drinkers alike, this experience requires no prior beer knowledge, just curiosity and a willingness to taste beyond the label.
