My husband Josh suffered a right sided MCA stroke on 1/21/24. The doctors believed it was from an allergic reaction. He only had a 32% chance of surviving. They told us he would not be able to walk talk or even get out of bed. The only hospital willing to take a chance on Josh was Jefferson Abington Hospital. Josh had to undergo a craniotomy removing half his skull to release built up pressure on his brain stem. After the surgery Josh started to regain function on his right side and could move his right side and even could communicate using his hands. While in the hospital Josh regained his voice and began to talk. The doctors were stunned since they thought his motor skills would never come back.
After 48 days in the hospital he was transported to Moss/McGee rehab where he started intense physical therapy. Josh progressed so much and started to regain movement on his left side but not enough to fully walk or move unassisted. Unfortunately health insurance only pays for a tiny visit at this facility so he had to move to a skilled nursing home since our house is not equipped to get him home.
He was only in the nursing home 3 days before he fell out of his bed due to no guard rails were on his bed. Josh is NOT safe at this facility and our health care system sucks for young adults who endure a stroke. All the programs and facilities are built around people of old age so many programs turn Josh away due to his age.
This benefit is so important to us since it will allow us to get Josh home to a safe space where he can have physical therapy at home and can be taken care of properly.
