From Rags to Richness
Together we’ll explore “toothbrush” rag rugging using sheet yarn. You’ll learn practical techniques, cultural history, and the beauty of transforming everyday textiles into meaningful, functional art. Learn to weave a rag rug and basket using the "toothbrush" technique with yarn made in class from discarded sheets and fabric scraps.
This isn’t just craft—it’s craftivism: a soulful blend of heritage, healing, and sustainability.
Basket weaving in Africa can be traced back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence, such as fragments of baskets found in Egypt, suggests that the craft was practiced as far back as 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
You can make a coaster or a small basket to take home or use the kit provided to continue making a larger, sustainable item for your home.
These rugs are exceptionally strong and can typically be machine washed and dried, often lasting for 30 to 50 years.
- Requires very little equipment and no specialized skills like crocheting or weaving on a loom.
- Zero-cost way to repurpose household textiles that would otherwise go to a landfill.
We’ll return to the rhythms of our grandmothers’ hands and honor the Earth by upcycling discarded fabric into beautiful new forms. Whether you're weaving for wellness or to connect with your roots, you're joining a quiet revolution.
PLEASE BRING: old sheets, worn clothes, or fabric you’d love to give a second life or to honor your ancestors. We will have all the runner strips and tools you need on-site. You’ll take a complete kit (tools, materials, and instructions) home with you!
